CA City Council Staffer: ‘F*cking Idiot’ Ferguson Protesters, ‘I Wanted To Shoot Them’

December 12, 2014 in Blogs

By Tom Boggioni, Raw Story

After hearing the chant 'hands up, don't shoot,' councilwoman's community liaison says she wants to shoot demonstrators.

A staffer for a San Diego city councilwoman reacted to protesters who interrupted inauguration proceedings with “hands up, don’t shoot” by referring to the disruptors as “f*cking idiots,” before adding “I wanted to shoot them,” reports KPBS.

Shirley Owens, who serves as a community liaison to Councilwoman Lorie Zapf, made the comments in the front of members of the public and the press as they waited for an opportunity to speak with the councilwoman after she was sworn in to serve a new term.

The protesters began their rally outside San Diego’s Golden Hall, chanting “hands up, don’t shoot,” before entering the building. Once inside they rotated between gestures of raising their arms up, putting their hands around their throats,  and staging a “die in” by lying down on the ground.

Following the inauguration ceremonies, a frustrated Owens was heard saying, “f*cking idiots with their hands up” and “I wanted to shoot them.”

Asked later in the day about the protesters and Owen’s comments, Zapf said she supported the demonstrators’ right to protest and said they were not disruptive at the ceremony. She added that she would speak to Owen about her comments.

In a statement, delivered the next day  by her communications director, Alex Bell, she said: ” Protesting is one of the rights guaranteed to us by the First Amendment, and Councilmember Zapf fully supports that right. Regarding any comment that may or may not have been made by a staff member, action is being taken internally to address the issue. Due to the City’s personnel rules, I am unable to discuss this matter further at this time.”

Bell added that neither Zapf nor Owens would speak to the media about the incident, saying it was a “personnel matter.”

Mark Jones, the 33-year-old Marine veteran who led the protest, said Owen’s comments were an example of the “bigotry” and “racial discrimination” that he and other members of the group were protesting against.

“I know that I have to go through this very system to produce …read more

Sen. Paul Introduces Bill to Prevent President Obama’s Executive Amnesty

December 12, 2014 in Politics & Elections

Senator Rand Paul today introduced the Preventing Executive Overreach on Immigration Act. This is companion legislation to Congressman Ted Yoho’s bill (H.R. 5759) that passed the House of Representatives on December 4, 2014 on a 219-197 vote. This legislation would end President Obama’s executive action on immigration and restore the Congress’ constitutional role as the body to craft legislation. Article I of the Constitution places the legislative powers in Congress. The President does not have the power under the Constitution to rewrite immigration laws to exempt classes of people from a law that was passed by Congress and signed into law.’I believe that the Constitution is clear that the legislative power resides in Congress. The President is not a king and he does not have the power to enact laws then execute his own laws. Our Constitution is being violated by this executive order and other actions by the Obama Administration to govern by executive fiat,’ Sen. Paul stated. A copy of the legislation can be found HERE. …read more

Science Says Men Are More Likely To Die Doing Stupid Things

December 12, 2014 in Blogs

By Jenny Kutner, Salon

Men seem predisposed to win the Darwin Awards.

Men are stupid idiots. (And no, I am not just typing these words to secure my misandrist card for life.) According to a new report in the British Medical Journal, which releases a silly edition every year just in time for the holidays, men are actually stupid idiots. Science says.

This year, the journal released a study measuring the gender divide among people who die doing really stupid shit, and found that men are significantly more likely to suffer fatalities from taking needless, or “idiotic” (to be technical about it), risks. Researchers looked at outcomes from the past 20 years of Darwin Award winners, or people who “die in such an idiotic manner that ‘their action ensures the long-term survival of the species, by selectively allowing one less idiot to survive.’” The study offers some examples of how to qualify:

[Nominees] must improve the gene pool by eliminating themselves from the human race using astonishingly stupid methods. … These include the thief attempting to purloin a steel hawser from a lift shaft, who unbolted the hawser while standing in the lift, which then plummeted to the ground, killing its occupant; the man stealing a ride home by hitching a shopping trolley to the back of a train, only to be dragged two miles to his death before the train was able to stop; and the terrorist who posted a letter bomb with insufficient postage stamps and who, on its return, unthinkingly opened his own letter.

According to the data, men account for 88.7 percent of Darwin Award winners. The researchers concluded that this was consistent with “male idiot theory,” which is, simply, that “men are idiots and idiots do stupid things.”

The finding actually ties in well with other research on men’s risk-taking behaviors compared to women’s; it’s already well-founded that men are more likely to end up in the emergency room with risk-related injuries, at least partly because of social circumstance (men are more likely to have dangerous jobs). But what the Darwin Awards study finds is that they also might end …read more

This Week in Religion: Kentucky Govt Finally Cuts Off Subsidies to Noah's Ark Museum

December 12, 2014 in Blogs

By Dan Arel, AlterNet

The biggest fundamentalist freakouts of the week.

This has not been the best of weeks for Ken Ham, the president of Answers in Genesis, a Creationist apologist ministry which operates the Creation Museum. It seems Ham’s recent undertaking, building a Noah’s Ark theme park, is not quite going his way.

After being granted an $18 million tax incentive by the state of Kentucky’s tourism board, and just days after unveiling a billboard with the slogan “Thank God you cannot sink this ship,” the state has rescinded the tax incentive. Kentucky has found that the project violates state and federal employment laws.

“State tourism tax incentives cannot be used to fund religious indoctrination or otherwise be used to advance religion,” Tourism Secretary Bob Stewart wrote in the letter to the park. “The use of state incentives in this way violates the separation of church and state provisions of the Constitution and is therefore impermissible.”

Even Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, who has fully supported the project, could not defend the organization.

“While the leaders of the Ark Encounter had previously agreed not to discriminate in hiring based on religion, they now refuse to make that commitment and it has become apparent that they do intend to use religious beliefs as a litmus test for hiring decisions,” Beshear said.

Several Lake Worth City, Florida commissioners walked out of a government meeting, upset that the opening invocation was being delivered by an atheist. Lake Worth Mayor Pam Triolo and three other commissioners exited the meeting room when Miami atheist Preston Smith approached the stand to give an invocation.

In a statement, the mayor said that free speech works both ways and that she does not have to listen to anything she does not agree with. Other commissioners did not agree with the walkout. Commissioner Christopher McVoy told WPTV that it was, “very un-American, and a slap in the face to the principles people fought very hard to make sure we had those rights.”

Speaking of free speech, Glenn Beck is quite upset over this week's episode of “Family Guy,” which is titled “The 2000-Year-Old-Virgin.” The …read more

The 7 Worst Things That Happened This Week: Cheney Unapologetic After Torture Report

December 12, 2014 in Blogs

By Natalie Shure, AlterNet

Burger King, Shell Oil, Congress: they're just some of the things in the news that peeved us.

Why are you so mad about torture when you should be mad about universal healthcare?

If you’re a feeling person, chances are you’re still reeling with horror over the CIA torture report, the 600-page “Fuck You” to now debunked American values. But not everyone had a beef with years of anal sadism that accomplished exactly nothing. In an interview with NPR, Former Vice President Dick Cheney once again lived up to his nickname and said he had no sympathy for the detainees and would do it all over again. He shot back at criticism on ABC News: “What are we supposed to do? Kiss [the architect of the attacks] on two cheeks?” (What – you wouldn’t make the jump from a friendly greeting to shooting pureed hummus up someone’s rectum?!) Sandy Rios, a Fox News contributor who has her french-tipped tentacles in plenty of far-right garbage bins, also failed to see the problem with the report. On her radio show, she said she doesn’t mind torture, and this whole hullaballoo is really just a distraction from Obamacare anyway. Rios also admitted that she didn’t actually read the report – and given her fondness for slamming people like Eric Garner, she is no stranger to not reading things.

We must save our valiant men from rape-shrieking drama queens

As the account of the gang-rape at the center of Rolling Stone’s November 19 expose on UVA rape culture is called into serious question, some savvy analysts are confident the issue points to more than just unethical journalism and a college student suffering mental illness. Don’t let the fact that they’ve controlled institutional power for all of history fool you: the real victims in our society are men. Phyllis Schlafly, who famously helped knock down the Equal Rights Amendment, said the botched Rolling Stone tale proves how dangerous college is for dudes these days. “The feminists are perfectly glad to make false accusations and then claim all men are …read more

Was My 17-Year-Old Son Lynched in 2014? Police Won't Tell Me

December 12, 2014 in Blogs

By Claudia Lacy, The Guardian

Tell us what happened to Lennon. Tell me what happened to my son.

The knock on the door came at about noon. I’d woken up feeling unwell that morning and had called the hospital where I work to say I wasn’t coming in. I was on the phone with my sister and just when the door knocked she was telling me that she’d heard a body had been found hanging in a local park. That was strange.

I opened the door and saw the police chief of our town, Bladenboro in North Carolina, standing there. “I need you to come with me to identify a body,” Chris Hunt said. That put me into a tail-spin. What was it he wanted? Who did I have to identify?

I got into my car and followed him to a trailer park about a quarter of a mile from my house. It’s an exposed, lonely place, with a line of eight children’s swing sets in the center of several trailer homes that have mostly white occupants.

As we pulled up, I was directed to an ambulance parked on the grass. Just as I was coming up to it, I saw a police officer wrapping up the yellow crime-scene tape that had been put around one of the swing sets, as though as to say job done. That was really odd, I remember thinking at the time – I’ve seen lots of crime scenes over the years and they always leave the tape up, to preserve the integrity of the site, for days if not weeks.

I stepped up into the ambulance and stood over a black body bag. My 17-year-old son, Lennon, was inside.

I unzipped the bag down to his waist. I was in shock, despair, but I wanted to see what had happened to him. I wanted to know why my son was here, in this desolate place, lying dead in a body bag. As I stepped back out of the vehicle, I spoke out loud and clear. “Whoever did this,” I said, “they took him down, because he didn’t do this to …read more
