'Lean the F*** Away from Me': Jessica Williams Responds to Critic Second-Guessing Her Career Choices

February 19, 2015 in Blogs

By Katie McDonough, Salon

“The Daily Show” comic had to defend herself against an offensive accusation that she was holding herself back.

After a week of intense speculation about who would be taking over “The Daily Show,” Jessica Williams addressed the rumors that she was (or at least should be) the heir apparent for host. In a series of tweets, Williams thanked people for the support, but said she wouldn’t be sitting behind the anchor desk any time soon. “Fact 1: I’m not hosting. Thank you but I am extremely under-qualified for the job!” she tweeted. “I am super not right for it, but there are quite a few people who are! Can’t wait to stick around & see what happens.”

Many a crying emoji was shared in response, but Williams made it clear that she was good with where she’s at and with everything that’s still ahead of her, tweeting, “I’m not like, dead. This is the beginning of my career.” A little while later, a writer for the Billfold responded to Williams’ announcement with a piece that claimed she was a “victim” of impostor syndrome, and that she needed to “lean in.”

Williams swiftly defended herself against the accusation:

Are you unaware, how insulting that can be for a fully functioning person to hear that her choices are invalid? Because you have personally decided, that I DON’T know myself- as a WOMAN you are saying that I need to lean in. Because of my choice, you have diagnosed me with something without knowing me at all. For the world to see.

And this is the problem with “lean in” applied as a universal feminist ethos. Like most supposedly universal narratives, it’s incredibly limiting. Sheryl Sandberg acknowledged in the book that she didn’t believe that women “should all have the same objectives” or face the same obstacles, but much of the advice is still presented as inclusive when it’s actually narrowly tailored to a certain kind of woman (namely, white, upwardly mobile and married to, or interested in marrying, a man who is likely the same), working to achieve a certain kind of power …read more

Michigan Republican Official Fatally Shoots Self in Eye While Trying to Adjust Bra Gun Holster

February 19, 2015 in Blogs

By Kali Holloway, AlterNet

Another tragedy strikes a 'responsible gun owner.'

It’s now official: a local elected Michigan Republican was accidentally killed while trying to adjust the gun in her bra holster. Though Christina Bond fatally shot herself in the eye on New Year’s Day, it wasn’t until Wednesday that a public safety investigation was able to confirm the details surrounding her death.

Bond, age 55, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and more recently, a Republican precinct delegate for Saint Joseph Charter Precinct 1.

According to St. Joseph public safety director Mark Clapp, who spoke with the Kalamazoo Gazette, Bond “was having trouble adjusting her bra holster, couldn't get it to fit the way she wanted it to. She was looking down at it and accidentally discharged the weapon.”

A look at Bond’s Facebook page indicates she was a fan of Fox News and several conservative organizations. She had recently posted a handful of updates expressing opposition to the Ferguson protests (including one in which she responded to a story about an SUV hitting protesters with, “Yep….. Don't stop…”). She also posted an update questioning whether Obama is American and one in which she asked, “Why hasn't this man been impeached!! He is an embarrassment to the USA.”

Bra holsters, like the one pictured below, are just one of several conceal-carry items aimed at women. To check out others, click here

'Open Carry T-Shirts' Look So Much Like Real Guns, You Just Might Get Shot

February 19, 2015 in Blogs

By Kali Holloway, AlterNet

Even the seller concedes there's a decent chance wearing the shirt could put you under fire.

There’s good news and bad news for gun nuts. The good news is, a Colorado business is now selling t-shirts decorated with a very realistic image of a gun in a shoulder strap holster so you can “support the 2nd Amendment.” The bad news is, it looks so real that wearing it could get you shot.

Even the co-creator of the shirt, business owner Paul Liebe, whose co-designer is a marine veteran, acknowledges there’s a distinct possibility someone will mistake the gun for a real one and possibly shoot you. And that “someone” is likely to be the police.

We think it’s safe to say the target demo for this shirt is lily-white.

It even comes with a warning, featured prominently on the “Open Carry T-Shirts” website.

“At a short distance the gun looks real! Law enforcement officers may overreact to your shirt! Be responsible! Obey all orders! Halt! Freeze! Stop! Immediately!” the webpage states.

The disclaimer goes on from there: “Do not reach towards the holster and gun! Your actions could get you injured or even killed.”

Still there's more. “This could be you,” the site states, indicating a picture of three grave markers.

So, there you have it. “Open Carry T-Shirts”: A dumb way to try to annoy liberals that literally might get you killed.

Have at it, ammosexuals. Here's hoping it’s worth it.

An Exciting Democracy Movement Arises in Chicago

February 19, 2015 in Blogs

By Jim Hightower, AlterNet

“Reclaim Chicago” has a bold progressive plan to reclaim the Windy City from the one percent.

Chicago! City of broad shoulders. Plutocratic hog butcher. Toolmaker for progressive change. Stacker of the wheat of grassroots power, wheat separated from the chaff of corporate politicians. Stormy, husky, brawling. Planning, building, breaking, rebuilding. Under its wrist is the pulse, and under its ribs is the heart of the people. Laughing! Proud to be hog butcher, toolmaker, stacker of wheat.

Apologies to Carl Sandburg for my butchering of his 1914 poetic paean to the rise of this colossus of a working-class city — but I see a promising new movement of broad-shouldered populist change for all of America arising today from the heart of Chicago's workaday people. Under the banner of “Reclaim Chicago,” a dynamic, politically savvy progressive coalition has emerged, engaging thousands of grassroots Chicagoans in a people-led democratic movement to reclaim their city from the cabal of corporate elites and corrupt politicians now reigning over them.

These are not just mad-as-hell ranters, but mad-as-hellers with a bold agenda for moving their city toward fairness and justice for all. They're mad-as-hellers who have a shared vision; a long term plan; a democratic organizational framework; a range of trainers to provide movement skills and tools for all involved; a network for developing, electing and holding accountable their own office holders; and — most important — both a strong sense of purpose and an energizing sense of fun. After all, battling the bastards is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on!

And the people of Chicago are about to have some fun. They're grappling with a big question that nearly every urban place in our country faces: Can anyone really govern such a sprawling, brawling city?

Reclaim Chicago says the answer is a great big “NO.” Moreover, asserts this grassroots group, no one should. Rather, the many should, and if they're organized through a democratic network, the people can be their own government, producing …read more

Walmart Raising the Wage for 500,000 Employees

February 19, 2015 in Blogs

By Kali Holloway, AlterNet

The big box retailer's announcement is sure to impact the national debate around increasing the federal minimum wage.

Walmart has a long and storied (and well-earned) reputation for shortchanging its employees. That may change slightly following the corporate behemoth’s announcement this morning that it will be raising the pay of about half a million of its employees.

The new rate increase will raise hourly pay for employees to $9 as of April. Walmart says it also plans a second increase that will ensure all associates will be making $10 by next February.

Not only does this potentially alter Walmart’s image as one of the most egregious examples of corporate greed – it may have a big impact on the ongoing national conversation around raising the minimum wage.

The announcement came as part of Walmart’s quarterly earnings announcement. In the release, CEO Doug McMillon stated:

“Current and future associates will benefit from this initiative, which ensures that Walmart hourly associates earn at least $1.75 above today's federal minimum wage, or $9.00 per hour, in April. The following year, by Feb. 1, 2016, current associates will earn at least $10.00 per hour.”

There are other pay raises afoot as well. In an letter to associates, McMillon wrote:

“We’re also strengthening our department manager roles and will raise the starting wage for some of these positions to at least $13 an hour this summer and at least $15 an hour early next year.”

McMillon also noted that the company is modifying its “hiring, training, compensation and scheduling programs.” The change, according to the CEO, will allow employees “more control over their schedules.”

The estimated cost of the pay raises and other changes announced today hovers somewhere around $1 billion dollars for the fiscal year.

A new Libertarian position on ISIS

February 19, 2015 in Blogs

By Political Zach Foster

We’re now walking a fine line between the non-aggression principle and playing witness to murder. While the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria hasn’t attacked the United States homeland, neither were they ever libertarian-style freedom fighters simply trying to liberate Iraq from an occupying army. They themselves were a conquering and occupying army trying to form a new state!

While ISIS may not be an existential threat to the United States–they don’t have the power to destroy America–they certainly are an imminent threat. They just keep growing and conquering and planting new cells in countries around the world. Worse yet, they efficiently murder civilians at an industrial capacity not seen since the Yugoslav Wars.

I believe in blowback. I believe that the U.S. government’s actions abroad directly fanned the flames of Islamic terrorism worldwide. However, while not intervening in future conflicts will prevent future blowback, nonintervention does nothing to dissipate the blowback that already exists. So while the ISIS terrorist quasi-state may not an existential threat, they are an imminent threat and will one day directly attack Americans (and not in the Middle East).

I’ve seen what they do. I’ve read the numbers of the literally tens of thousands of civilians they’ve murdered, including women and children. I read the statistics of their murders and racketeering they boast about in their corporate-style Annual Report. One doesn’t need to buy into false flag propaganda to objectively match words with action, history with current events, to deduce that this terror group is here to stay until totally destroyed from the outside.

Libertarians too often hide behind the concept of nonintervention. Well, here’s the deal: no country or population ever hated the U.S. for saving people from being massacred. They hated the U.S. for sticking around after liberation and then dictating to the people how they would live, what type of government they’d have, and what corporations they’d do business with.
