Expanding Trade in Medical Care through Telemedicine

Telemedicine, the delivery of health care services from one site to another via electronic communications, is already being used in various ways to provide care to those who could not otherwise receive it. And as medical treatment continues to move online, the potential for treating patients across borders grows. In a new study, Cato scholar Simon Lester argues that, by using trade negotiations to remove barriers and promote more international trade in medical services, governments can bring new competitive forces to a sector that has traditionally been characterized by an oligopolistic structure.
