Roseanne 'Was Alt-Right Before We Knew What Alt-Right Was': CNN Guest Explains the Actor's Dark History

May 29, 2018 in Blogs

By Cody Fenwick, AlterNet

The attack on Valerie Jarrett on Tuesday was just the most recent outrage sparked by the comedian.

While many of President Donald Trump's defenders argued that the firing of Roseanne Barr by ABC over a racist tweet on Tuesday had nothing to do with the president, CNN contributor and author Amanda Carpenter explained how the comedian's vile words were an extension of the forces that propelled Trump to power.

“Roseanne… is similar to what promoted Donald Trump,” Carpenter said. “She was alt-right before we knew what alt-right was. Everyone thinks, 'Oh, political correctness' — no! This whole hiding behind memes and jokes to push racism and anti-Semitism has been happening for a long time.”

For example, on Tuesday, Barr also tweeted about a repugnant conspiracy theory that the Jewish billionaire George Soros, a Hungarian-born American, was a Nazi collaborator, despite that fact that this claim has been repeatedly debunked (Soros was 14 when World War II ended).

Barr previously made a racist insult against former national security adviser Susan Rice, echoing her racist attack on former President Barack Obama aide Valerie Jarrett that led to the cancellation of her show on Tuesday.

And that's just a sample of her troubling history.

Carpenter continued: “Donald Trump, in his leadership position, has brought that out more, playing the 'both sides' argument at all times. I would expect to see some both-sidesism tonight. And, I'm sorry, I can't keep wringing my hands about what Donald Trump is going to do, because this needs to be a conversation about what other people are going to do. If you are in a position of media power, are you willing to regulate your platform in some manner and give up some clicks in the name of civility? ABC did the right thing. I'm looking at Facebook and Twitter to start doing more of the same.”

Indictments, Sexual Blackmail and an Affair: Missouri's Republican Gov. Eric Greitens Resigns in Disgrace

May 29, 2018 in Blogs

By David Nir, The New Civil Rights Movement

He was headed for impeachment as scandals mounted.

On Tuesday afternoon, following months of scandals, indictments in two separate criminal cases, and looming impeachment proceedings, Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens finally announced he would resign effective Friday. Greitens, a former Navy SEAL who upset the GOP establishment in winning his 2016 primary for governor and had designs on the presidency, saw his career begin to unravel early this year, when a local TV station reported that he’d had an extra-marital affair with a woman who cut his hair, then blackmailed her into silence by taking a photo of her nude, bound, and blindfolded.

Those explosive allegations prompted St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner to indict Greitens on charges of first-degree felony invasion of privacy in February, and they also convinced the state legislature to commence its own investigation. In April, lawmakers released a damning report that found the woman to be a “credible witness” and disclosed new accusations, including her claim that Greitens coerced her into performing oral sex even as she wept “uncontrollably.”

Later that same month, Greitens was indicted a second time, this time on unrelated charges of computer tampering. Those charges stemmed from an investigation into whether his gubernatorial campaign improperly obtained a list of donors from The Mission Continues, a charity for veterans that Greitens founded and ran until stepping down the year before he began his run for governor.

All the while, Greitens insisted that the accusations against him were “lies” (though he acknowledged the affair) and declared himself the victim of a “political witch hunt,” blaming liberals and even conservative bogeyman George Soros. Yet the biggest threat to his career always lurked in the legislature, despite the fact that both chambers are dominated by his fellow Republicans. Indeed, as one unnamed legislator put it, “Eric Greitens spent a year calling every Republican in the state corrupt. I'll be shocked if any of them stand up for him as an alleged blackmailing psychopath.”

Greitens had campaigned for office as a Trumpian outsider—his most notorious ads featured him literally blowing stuff up with a high-powered firearm—and his nonstop …read more

Republican Congresswoman Blames School Shootings on 'Pornography' at the 'Grocery Store'

May 29, 2018 in Blogs

By David Badash, The New Civil Rights Movement

It remains unclear what grocery stores sell pornography.

A Republican U.S. Congresswoman has a unique theory about why there's been an increase in school mass shootings in America: people are apparently able to buy pornographic materials in supermarkets.

Rep. Diane Black (R-TN), a huge Trump supporter who is running to become her state's governor and is appearing with the president Tuesday evening, made her remarkably false and ill-informed remarks during a listening session with local religious leaders.

The Huffington Post reports Black says pornography is a “big part” of the reason for the increase in school shootings. She brought up the issue of schools shootings then offered her belief of why they are on the rise.

“Pornography,” Rep. Black told the Tennessee ministers.

“It’s available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store. Yeah, you have to reach up to get it, but there’s pornography there,” she said, according to the audio below. “All of this is available without parental guidance. I think that is a big part of the root cause.”

Black also blamed “the 'deterioration of the family,' mental illness and violent movies,” The Huffington Post's Jennifer Bendery reports. (In her article Bendery asks: “Does anyone know what kind of porn Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) is watching?”) It's also unclear which supermarkets sell pornography.

On Monday Black told “Fox & Friends” that she is filing a bill to allow the federal government set up a “GoFundMe” type of website so Americans can Donte their own money to help build President Trump's racist wall.

'Tone Does Start at the Top': Valerie Jarrett Explains How Roseanne's Racism Has Roots in Trumpism

May 29, 2018 in Blogs

By Cody Fenwick, AlterNet

The former Obama aide gracefully responded to the comedian's racist attack on Tuesday.

Valerie Jarrett, a former aide to President Barack Obama, responded to a racist tweet from comedian Roseanne Barr on Tuesday by tying the remarks to a “tone” set by President Donald Trump, who had repeatedly pushed racist views and policies since the beginning of his campaign.

Barr's tweet, which led to the cancelation of her popular sitcom hours later, targeted Jarrett, saying: “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” Its racism was widely condemned, and Jarrett's response came on an MSNBC panel.

“Tone does start at the top,” Jarrett said. “And we like to look up to our president, and we feel as though he reflects the values of our country.”

“But I also think every individual citizen has a responsibility, too. And it's up to all of us to push back,” she said. “Our government is only going to be as good as we make it be. And as Reverend [Al Sharpton] always taught me, people on the outside have to push hard, and people on the inside have to listen.”

'Nakedly Racist': CNN's Jake Tapper Says Roseanne's 'Vileness' Has Been on Display for 'Years'

May 29, 2018 in Blogs

By Cody Fenwick, AlterNet

ABC called the remarks “abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values.”

CNN's Jake Tapper slammed Roseanne Barr on Tuesday after her ABC sitcom was canceled following a viciously racist tweet she posted earlier in the morning. The CNN host pointed out that, despite ABC's appropriate decision to cancel her show, their decision must be viewed in light of the fact that she has spewed vile hatred on Twitter for years.

Tuesday's cancelation came after what was the final straw: a tweet targeting Valerie Jarret, a former adviser to President Barack Obama. She wrote: “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”

Tapper joined those condemning the comments on his show “The Lead.”

“Nakedly Islamophobic, nakedly racist, and comments that ABC called, 'abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values,'” Tapper said of the tweet. “The talent agency that represents Barr, ICM Partners, also dropped her this afternoon. Barr later deleted that tweet and wrote another trying to apologize to Valerie Jarret, but by then it was too late. The whole world had seen this nastiness. It's a vileness that Barr has been showing to the world for years on social media, one might note.”

He continued: “The reboot of the '90s sitcom in which Roseanne played a Trump supporter was an instant hit earlier this year, garnering 18 million viewers in its premiere back in March, with a second season ordered just days later. It was heralded, this show, by the president of the United States who phoned Roseanne Barr to congratulate her after the premiere.”

At a rally in front of his supporters, President Donald Trump said of the show, “It was about us!”
