Fox News' Jeanine Pirro Calls for Jeff Sessions’ Head (because she wants his job)

June 9, 2018 in Blogs

By Simon Malloy, Media Matters

Fox News’ loudest Trump propagandist aspires to be attorney general

The key to understanding how Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro operates is to realize that she is single-minded in her personal ambition while completely unencumbered by anything resembling shame, dignity, or professional integrity. As it stands, Pirro is one of the more influential pundits in the country by virtue of her close relationship with President Donald Trump. She uses her awful Fox News program, Justice with Judge Jeanine, to propagandize on Trump’s behalf, for which she is granted access to the president, interviews with key administration officials, etc.

But that’s not enough for Pirro, who turned to televised punditry only after her once-promising political and legal career was left in smoldering ruin by her personal scandals and widely mocked campaign ineptitude. According to Politico, Pirro aspires to the lofty office of attorney general of the United States and has been telling the president’s advisers that “she’s interested in taking over as the nation’s top law enforcement official.”

Ordinarily, it would seem ridiculous that a cable pundit would have any chance of serving as attorney general, but that was before the reality TV star president tapped two cable pundits to be his chief economic and national security advisers and nominated his doctor to run the Department of Veterans Affairs because he gave a good press conference.

There are, however, some major obstacles to Pirro landing her dream job: chief among them, the guy currently holding it. She can’t be attorney general while Jeff Sessions is still in office. So Pirro is taking matters into her own hands and using her cable news program to undermine her supposed rival and publicly call for his resignation (or ouster).

Here’s Pirro on June 2 saying, “If Jeff Sessions can’t do his job because he’s too scared or recusing himself, maybe he ought to resign himself. But that’s just me.”

And here she is one week before that calling Sessions an “absentee attorney general” and asking White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, “Isn’t it time to get a working attorney general on staff?”

Muhammad Ali’s Ex-Wife Slaps Down Trump’s Pardon Offer: ‘Pardon Someone Who Kneels’

June 9, 2018 in Blogs

By Bob Brigham, Raw Story

Khalilah Ali, who was married to the legendary pugilist from 1967 to 1976, spoke about Trump's pardon offer.

President Donald Trump's widely-mocked trial balloon of pardoning Muhammad Ali gave the legendary boxer's former wife the opportunity to suggest a better course for the commander-in-chief.

Khalilah Ali, who was married to the legendary pugilist from 1967 to 1976, spoke with TMZ about the pardon offer.

“He's gone,” she noted. “You want to give somebody a pardon who's alive.”

“I think [Trump] probably was a fan of Ali and he thought he would say something positive about him. That must be it, but it's a little too late for that, he probably did it with good intentions, but he's on the late show.”

Khalilah Ali suggested a better venue for Trump's forgiveness.

“I think the pardon should go to those who kneel, that's who should get the pardons, that would be putting it in the right perspective, in the right place,” she explained. “If he accepts Muhammad Ali being right for what he did, and want to give him a pardon, then that pardon should be going out to all those people who kneel.”

“If you're willing to say its okay for Muhammad Ali to be pardoned for his freedom and standing up his rights and standing up for not going to the army and standing up for freedom, then you're telling me that you're ready to pardon everybody that has done that in the same manner as Muhammad Ali has,” Khalilah Ali reminded.

Here Are the 14 Habits of Highly Miserable People

June 9, 2018 in Blogs

By Cloe Madanes, Psychotherapy Networker

How to succeed at self-sabotage.

Most of us claim we want to be happy—to have meaningful lives, enjoy ourselves, experience fulfillment, and share love and friendship with other people and maybe other species, like dogs, cats, birds, and whatnot. Strangely enough, however, some people act as if they just want to be miserable, and they succeed remarkably at inviting misery into their lives, even though they get little apparent benefit from it, since being miserable doesn’t help them find lovers and friends, get better jobs, make more money, or go on more interesting vacations. Why do they do this? After perusing the output of some of the finest brains in the therapy profession, I’ve come to the conclusion that misery is an art form, and the satisfaction people seem to find in it reflects the creative effort required to cultivate it. In other words, when your living conditions are stable, peaceful, and prosperous—no civil wars raging in your streets, no mass hunger, no epidemic disease, no vexation from poverty—making yourself miserable is a craft all its own, requiring imagination, vision, and ingenuity. It can even give life a distinctive meaning.

So if you aspire to make yourself miserable, what are the best, most proven techniques for doing it? Let’s exclude some obvious ways, like doing drugs, committing crimes, gambling, and beating up your spouse or neighbor. Subtler strategies, ones that won’t lead anyone to suspect that you’re acting deliberately, can be highly effective. But you need to pretend that you want to be happy, like everybody else, or people won’t take your misery seriously. The real art is to behave in ways that’ll bring on misery while allowing you to claim that you’re an innocent victim, ideally of the very people from whom you’re forcibly extracting compassion and pity.

Here, I cover most areas of life, such as family, work, friends, and romantic partners. These areas will overlap nicely, since you can’t ruin your life without ruining your marriage and maybe your relationships with your children and friends. It’s inevitable that as you make yourself miserable, you’ll be making those …read more

If You Inject a Stream of Raw Ignorance Into a Vat of Gaseous Arrogance, Then Jolt the Mixture with 1,000 Megawatts of Malevolence … What Does It Produce?

Answer: Donald Trump's Executive Order of April 12.

Let's start with the arrogance. King Donald the First has been in a deep pout over negative articles about him in the Washington Post newspaper, which is owned by Jeff Bezos, King of the Amazon.com empire. Trump has fired off several rounds of angry tweets assailing Bezos, including a potshot claiming that Amazon is ripping off the post office by underpaying for the millions of its packages that the postal services ships.

Well, tweets are one thing, but King Donald has the firepower of the federal government at his beck and call, so he is arrogantly using the government power to escalate his personal spat with Bezos. By executive order, he set up a federal task force to conduct a pernicious political inquisition into “our money losing post office,” particularly looking at the “pricing of the package delivery market.”

This is where Trump's vast ignorance comes into play. Apparently, he's blissfully unaware that, far from being a money loser, the U.S. Postal Service has actually been earning about a billion dollars a year in profit. The false claim of “unsustainable” operational losses, repeated in King Donald's imperious order, stem from a 2006 political ploy by right wingers who want to destroy the public service. They passed a law dictating that USPS pre-fund retiree health benefits 75 years into the future — covering retirement costs for workers who haven't even been born!

This adds a totally hokey “expense” of up to $5 billion a year to the USPS corporate ledger, creating the fake “loss” Trump is now so bombastically citing as the rational for his destructive inquisition.

The humble U.S. postal system has 30,000 outlets serving every part of America, employs 630,000 people in good middle-class jobs and delivers …read more

For the Last 3 Years, Toddlers Have Been Shooting Themselves and Others on a Weekly Basis

June 9, 2018 in Blogs

By Walter Einenkel, Daily Kos

Since 2015, toddlers have on average shot someone every single week.

A couple years ago, Missouri had the dubious distinction of being the state with the most toddler shootings. This is when a toddler—a child under the age of four—gets their hands on a gun and either shoots him or herself or someone else. Since 2015, toddlers have on average shot someone every single week. In 2017, that rate of gun violence continued according to the Denver Post.

The Dearborn boys are at least the 42nd and 43rd people to get shot by a child under the age of 4 this year, according to a database of accidental child-involved shootings maintained by Everytown, a gun violence prevention group. On average, someone gets shot by an American toddler a little more frequently than once a week, similar to previous years.

These figures, which are compiled from media and police reports, are likely an undercount. If a child receives a relatively mild gunshot injury, such as a grazing, parents may try to keep the incident quiet and not seek medical care. It’s also possible that an unknown number of small children find guns and fire them without hitting anyone, which would not necessarily result in a medical or police report.

In many of these shooting cases, a toddler finds a gun and accidentally shoots himself with it – 27 out of the 43 toddler shootings involved self-inflicted injuries. Earlier this month in Ohio, for instance, a 3-year-old boy found his father’s loaded gun in the kitchen and fatally shot himself in the head with it.

This is not as surprising as it should be considering recent research that says 85 percent of parents who own firearms DO NOT practice correct firearm safety at home—specifically securing their firearms out of reach. According to GunViolenceArchive.org, an “online archive of gun violence incidents collected from over 2,500 media, law enforcement, government and commercial sources daily in an effort to provide near-real time data about the results of gun violence,” in the first five-plus months of 2018 there have been 139 children killed as a …read more
