Internet Blasts ‘Openly Racist’ Mike Huckabee for Posting Racist Tweet: 'This Is Fascism'

June 23, 2018 in Blogs

By David Badash, The New Civil Rights Movement

“Laying the Groundwork for Genocide.”

Mike Huckabee once portrayed himself as an affable centrist Republican, a man who loved people and loved playing his guitar. An ordained Baptist minister who would minister to the nation. He used all that to serve as the Republican governor of Arkansas for nine years, and run for president twice.

That was all a lie, a cover, a smokescreen. A mask.

Mike Huckabee is a racist.

It should come as little surprise. His daughter is the White House press secretary under President Donald Trump. She has a record of supporting Trump's polices and a record of lying to reporters on a regular basis.

Today, Mike Huckabee is under fire after he posted a vile and offensive tweet. It shows an image of young, shirtless teen boys with tattoos. The image has appeared on dozens of websites, and a Google image search titles it as “ms 13 gang sign.”

MS-13 is President Trump's “favorite” anti-immigrant tool, a dangerous gang he portrays as Central American, but it was formed on the streets of Los Angeles.

Huckabee had a different title than Google for the photo: “Nancy Pelosi introduces her campaign committee for the take back of the House.”

It's clear, unadulterated racism.

And many on social media berated the former Arkansas governor.

Take a look at some of the responses:

I know we're cautioned to go easy on the Nazi parallels, but this is too clear an example.

This is no different from a Nazi-era cartoon of criminal Jews.

Huckabee should be ostracized and ashamed.

This is racist.

This is fascism.

— Robert Rutledge (@rerutled) June 23, 2018

I sure hope the Hell you believe in exists, @GovMikeHuckabee.

P.S. No one with any sense was under the impression that you weren't an ignorant, racist fraud—but thanks for the confirmation.

Here Are 6 of the Most Absurd Excuses Right-Wing Media Used for Trump's Draconian Family Separation Policy

June 23, 2018 in Blogs

By Bobby Lewis, Media Matters

The president’s media enablers blamed Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, “the law on the book,” Democrats in Congress, the media, the families themselves, and even “the Illuminati of K Street” for the Trump administration’s policy.

As President Donald Trump’s administration implemented a new “zero tolerance” prosecution policy at the border that led to unprecedented and systematic separation of immigrant families and locking kids in cages, right-wing media flailed around trying to blame the administration’s policy on anybody or anything except Trump.

The president’s media enablers blamed Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, “the law on the book,” Democrats in Congress, the media, the families themselves, and even “the Illuminati of K Street” for the Trump administration’s policy:

Blaming the families themselves

  • Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt claimed that families “are choosing to be separated” by coming to the United States in the first place. Co-host Steve Doocy agreed, saying “the part that is troubling … is the conscious decisions the parents are making” in trying to bring their children to America.

  • Recently pardoned felon Dinesh D’Souza rhetorically questioned whether the “deported aliens” were “the ones choosing to separate their families.”

  • Fox’s David Bossie said that if parents “don’t become criminals, they’re not separated” from their children.

  • Fox’s Tomi Lahren said, “If you do not want to be separated, do not cross the border illegally. Follow our laws, follow the process. That's the best way to ensure that your family stays together.”

Blaming former presidents

  • Radio host Rush Limbaugh claimed that family separation at the border “is an entirely manufactured crisis. It’s entirely manufactured. This has been going on for years. It happened during the Obama administration.”

  • American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp declared, “Obama and Trump have [the] same child protection policy.”

  • Turning Point USA Communications Director Candace Owens falsely claimed that “these policies were in place” during the Obama administration.

  • Turning Point USA President Charlie Kirk falsely stated, “All of this happened for 8 years under Obama.”

  • CNN commentator Ben Ferguson shared an image on Facebook that claimed that policies of separating children from “illegal parents” had been in effect since 2009.

Deluxe Charter Schools Serve Up Opportunities For Taxpayer-Funded White Flight

June 23, 2018 in Blogs

By Laura Clawson, Daily Kos

Why charter schools do this is no mystery: racism pays.

Charter schools are often billed as benefiting disadvantaged urban kids—but in lots of places around the country, charters are segregating school systems by offering rich white families a way to get their kids away from students of color and poor students. In reality, 115 charter schools nationwide have student populations at least 20 percentage points whiter than public schools in their districts; more than 700 charter schools nationally are whiter than their district’s public schools.

Why charter schools do this is no mystery: racism pays. As for how they they do it, Emmanuel Felton reports on common tactics like not offering school bus service so that parents have to have the flexibility and the reliable vehicle to get their kids to and from school. Or they require uniforms from Land’s End that low-income families can’t afford. Or they create “priority attendance zones” that ensure that kids from mostly white neighborhoods will get an admissions advantage.

Felton reports in depth on Lake Oconee Academy in Georgia, which is 73 percent white while public schools in the district are just 12 percent white. It was founded essentially at the behest of a company selling luxury lakeside properties, and when the school opened, 80 percent of its spots were reserved for people living in that company’s properties. Lake Oconee Academy has a “piano lab” with 25 pianos. It has 17 Advanced Placement courses. And just 10 percent of its students are black in a district where 68 percent of public school students are black.

As one mother, who ruled out trying to send her kids to Lake Oconee Academy because there was no school bus to get them there, said, “It’s like a black and white thing, who has money and who doesn’t have money.” It’s not just Lake Oconee Academy, and it’s the kind of education policy the Trump administration, with Betsy DeVos heading the Education Department, is pushing.

'I Work For POTUS': Sarah Sanders Lashes Out at Restaurant Owner Who Booted Her Out

June 23, 2018 in Blogs

By Tom Boggioni, Raw Story

“Last night I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for @POTUS”

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed she was kicked out of a Virginia restaurant on Friday night — and attacked the owner on Twitter.

According to the spokesperson, who is reportedly looking to exit the White House, she was asked to leave because she works for President Donald Trump.

“Last night I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for and I politely left. Her actions say far more about her than about me. I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so,” she wrote.

'We Need to Talk About the Future of the Democratic Party': A Progressive Candidate's Twitter Thread Every Democrat and Independent Voter Should Read

June 23, 2018 in Blogs

By Jon Queally, Common Dreams

Ok. Republicans can read it, too.

Battling to unseat powerful Democrat and incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley from his seat in New York's 14th Congressional District in next week's primary, progressive challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Friday issued a rousing challenge to her party—and its wouldbe voters—as she offered a critique of the status quo and explained why it is time for constituents to demand more and better from their elected leaders.

With less than a week to go, Ocasio-Cortez has an uphill battle in New York's closed Democratic primary against Crowley, a veteran member of Congress who has climbed the ranks of the Demorat's House leadership.

But on Friday, she had a few things to say about the campaign she is running and where she believes the party needs to be heading.

She started by saying, “We need to talk about the future of the Democratic Party.” And then it went like this:
