Texas newspaper calls for 'cynical' Ted Cruz's resignation in scathing editorial

January 9, 2021 in Blogs

By Meaghan Ellis

The editorial board for the Houston Chronicle is now calling for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to resign from office after he led Republican efforts to invalidate the Electoral College certification.

The Chronicle, a stark critic of the Texas senator, published an editorial expressing concern about his role in the spread of misinformation about the presidential election which ultimately contributed to Trump supporters storming the U.S. Capitol.

While Cruz insists he has been on the right side of history by backing Trump’s baseless claims of widespread voter fraud, the publication argues that he “knew exactly what he was doing, what he was risking and who he was inciting as he stood on the Senate floor Wednesday and passionately fed the farce of election fraud even as a seething crowd of believers was being whipped up by President Trump a short distance away.”

Describing Cruz’s actions as a “cynical gamble,” the publication insists that the Republican senator “peddled his phony concern for the integrity of our elections, he argued that senators who voted to certify Biden’s victory would be telling tens of millions of Americans to ‘jump in a lake’ and that their concerns don’t matter.”

The editorial board also offered a direct request for Cruz making their concerns quite clear. “We’re done with the drama. Done with the opportunism. Done with the cynical scheming that has now cost American lives,” the editorial continued, adding, “Resign, Mr. Cruz, and deliver Texas from the shame of calling you our senator.”

The Houston Chronicle’s request for Cruz’s resignation comes one day after the senator’s interview on Friday. Despite criticism, Cruz defended his actions as he insisted opted to investigate Trump’s claims of widespread voter fraud to “reestablish widespread trust in the system.”

“What happened at the Capitol was a despicable act of terrorism,” Cruz said in the interview with Hearst Newspapers. “The violent criminals who attacked the Capitol should be fully prosecuted and they should go to jail for a very, very long time.”

Regardless of Cruz’s claims, his decision to challenge the Electoral College certification came after Trump had nearly five dozen post-election lawsuits tossed out of court. As for the U.S Capitol siege, Cruz did admit …read more

By Meaghan Ellis

Steve Bannon, the former White House Chief Strategist for the Trump administration, is the latest Trump affiliate to face social media consequences for the spread of misinformation.

On Friday, Jan. 8, YouTube opted to remove Bannon’s “War Room” podcast channel due to noncompliance with the video-sharing website’s guidelines.

In a statement to The Wrap, a YouTube spokesperson confirmed that Bannon’s channel and an associated channel were both banned The spokesperson also reiterated YouTube’s latest policy updates incorporated on Jan. 7 and the course of action that will be taken for those who violate rules regarding the spread of misinformation.

“In accordance with our strikes system, we have terminated Steve Bannon’s channel ‘War Room’ and one associated channel for repeatedly violating our Community Guidelines,” a YouTube spokesperson said. “As we said yesterday, any channel posting new videos with misleading content that alleges widespread fraud or errors changed the outcome of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election in violation of our policies will receive a strike, a penalty which temporarily restricts uploading or live-streaming. Channels that receive three strikes in the same 90-day period will be permanently removed from YouTube.”

Democrat proposes legislation to investigate Capitol Police for possible ties to white supremacy groups

January 9, 2021 in Blogs

By Meaghan Ellis

A new Democratic lawmaker is preparing to introduce legislation calling for an extensive investigation into the U.S. Capitol Police to determine whether or not any of the law enforcement agency’s officers have blatant or indirect ties to white supremacy and white nationalist groups.

During an interview with Mother Jones, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) elaborated on the goal of the legislation he reflected on the series of events that transpired on Wednesday, Jan. 6. He also expressed concern about the distinct difference in the way Capitol Police handled Trump supporters in comparison to Black Lives Matter protesters over the summer.

“It’s critical when you look at the disparity in terms of how the Capitol Police responded to the insurrection on Wednesday, versus how they responded to—not just [Black Lives Matter] protestors this summer, but other people of color, and people who are disabled, historically,” Bowman said.

Following the disturbing breach of the federal building, U.S. Capitol Police have come under fire for their handling of the violent pro-Trump riots. Photos and footage taken the day of the siege have raised lots of questions about some members of the Capitol Police.

From footage showing Capitol Police removing barricades and allowing rioters to move closer to the building to videos capturing officers standing by as Trump supporters stormed the building, many Democrats and Progressives have many concerns about the civil unrest that erupted on Wednesday. To make matters worse, some members of the law enforcement agency were also seen taking photos with Trump rioters.

Trump regrets committing to a peaceful transfer of power and will not resign: report

January 9, 2021 in Blogs

By Meaghan Ellis

One day after President Donald Trump released a video committing to a peaceful transfer of power, he was banned from Twitter—his strongest form of communication with his base. As expected, the new directive did not go over well with Trump and now, according to The New York Times, he regrets committing to a peaceful transition.

Amid calls for Trump’s resignation or impeachment, the isolated lame-duck president is reportedly seething behind closed doors at the White House and has made it clear that he will not resign.

The publication reports:

At the White House, Mr. Trump struck a defiant tone, insisting that he would remain a potent force in American politics even as aides and allies abandoned him and his post-presidential prospects turned increasingly bleak. Behind closed doors, he made clear that he would not resign and expressed regret about releasing a video on Thursday committing to a peaceful transition of power and condemning the violence at the Capitol that he had egged on a day before.

The latest report comes shortly after Trump’s commitment to a peaceful transfer of power. In a perplexing video message, the president offered a tone completely different from his typical attacking rhetoric. While he did not make any apologies for his involvement in the siege on the U.S. Capitol, he called for calm as he finally admitted that a new administration would be taking over on Jan. 20.

“Like all Americans, I am outraged by the violence, lawlessness, and mayhem,” Trump said in the video. He also claimed: “the demonstrators who infiltrated the capitol have defiled the seat of American democracy.”

He added, “To those who engaged in the acts of violence and destruction, you do not represent our country. And to those who broke the law, you will pay.”

As Inauguration Day nears, lawmakers are on edge as they are concerned about more potential damage an unpredictable Trump could cause in his final days at the White House.

BUSTED: Man in viral photo carrying Speaker Nancy Pelosi's lectern identified and arrested in Florida

January 9, 2021 in Blogs

By Meaghan Ellis

Amid the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6, a viral photo captured a male Trump supporter smiling while carrying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) lectern. Now, law enforcement has identified who he is and made an arrest.

According to the Miami Herald, the man in the viral photo has been identified as 36-year-old Adam Christian Johnson of Parrish, Fla. On Friday night, Johnson, described as a stay-at-home dad to his five children, was arrested on a federal U.S. marshal warrant and taken into custody at the Pinellas County jail.

Following the civil unrest at the Capitol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted a search based on the photo snapped of Johnson. The federal agency confirmed that he was quickly identified.

Johnson, himself, also posted to social media several times as he shared details about his stay in Washington, D.C., not long before the riot began. The publication also reports that, around that time, Johnson made derogatory remarks leveled at the Black Lives Matter movement and members of law enforcement he believed were infringing on his First Amendment protest rights.

Johnson’s arrest comes as the FBI continues its search for those who were involved in the siege on the U.S. Capitol. As of Friday, Jan. 8, law enforcement agencies had made more than 50 arrests in connection with the disturbing breach. Of the 52 arrests that have been made, The Hill reports 26 of the arrests were made on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol “including four for carrying pistols without a license and one for possession of a prohibited weapon.”

Another man, identified as Richard Barnett of Gravette, Arkansas, was also arrested after stealing items from Pelosi’s office.

However, law enforcement officials are still searching for others who were involved. According to Pinellas County arrest records, Johnson is still being held behind bars with no bond as he awaits trial.
