On Friday, June 16, over 4,000 employees at Discovery Communications stepped away from their desks to participate in the company’s eighth annual day of global employee volunteerism, “Discover Your Impact Day.” From Silver Spring to Beijing, employees in 60 offices across 37 countries participated in nearly 200 volunteer projects to help improve local communities worldwide. These projects included feeding the homeless, revitalizing local schools, cleaning community centers, improving conditions at pet adoption shelters, beautifying parks and waterways, and much more. As part of Discovery Impact, the company’s corporate social responsibility umbrella, Impact Day celebrates Discovery’s purpose-driven mission and provides employees with an opportunity to give back in the communities where they live and work. Saturday was World Wildlife Fund’s annual Earth Hour to raise awareness for climate change, and this year’s theme was Turn Up the Dark. Earth Hour challenged people all over the world to turn off their lights for one hour to demonstrate the need for action against climate change. At our global headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland we shut off our lights for 1 hour to show support for Earth Hour. And, of course, Discovery is a global media company with a mission-driven approach to not only entertain but inspire. So our colleagues in Romania joined in by interrupting its broadcast for a minute to ask viewers to turn off their TVs for one hour. This was a huge undertaking across departments, and with the strong support of our ad sales team. We were proud to support Earth Hour and turning up the dark! [...]

Puppy Bowl XIII
The biggest Sunday in sports is just two days away, so who will be victorious in Puppy Bowl XIII? While some might think Sunday is all about the Patriots versus the Falcons, the paw-sitively hardcore fans know it’s all about Team Ruff versus Team Fluff. Check out this year’s starting lineup, which features newcomers Alexander Hamilpup and Blitz, among many more. Like every year, these star pups come from local animal shelters in an effort to draw awareness to the importance of animal adoption. For nearly 100 deserving students from Dymally High School in Los Angeles, CA, Wednesday was certainly one to remember. Kicking off its sixth year, TLC’s Say Yes to the Prom initiative brought more magic and made more prom dreams come true than ever before. For the first time, fashion icon Betsey Johnson joined TLC’s Monte Durham to host the day of mentoring, prom dress and tuxedo “shopping,” head-to-toe makeovers, and a red carpet runway reveal show to top it all off. Because the true goals of Say Yes to the Prom extend beyond the glitz and glam, several important partnerships ensured a fulfilling and meaningful day for the students, all of whom are high achievers and class leaders. The Will & Jada Smith Family Foundation (WJSFF) partnered with the cause for the first time to introduce students to their Careers in Entertainment (CIE) program, boosting students from underserved communities and exposing them to careers in entertainment. All 1,000 Say Yes to the Prom participants nationwide will have the opportunity to participate in CIE, and qualified CIE participants will have the opportunity to participate in Say Yes to the Prom events in their cities. Additionally, representatives from organizations such as the Emma Bowen Foundation, a nonprofit [...]

Today, Discovery Education and 3M launched the 10th annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier science competition for students in grades 5-8.  This program offers young inventors the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be mentored by a 3M Scientist Mentor, compete for $25,000, and earn the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” The Challenge rewards curious students who use their science acumen and creativity to solve a problem in their local, national or global community. Fourteen-year-old Maanasa Mendu won last year for her creation of HARVEST, a bio-inspired energy device that captures energy in the form of wind, rain and sun – and converts it to power. Mendu was inspired to enter the contest through her “pretty awesome” eighth grade science teacher. Students in grades 5-8 can enter the challenge by creating a one to two-minute video communicating the science behind their big idea that could solve or impact an everyday problem.  Video entries will be evaluated based on their creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and delivery. Ten finalists will then be chosen to participate in an exclusive summer mentorship program, where they will work closely with and learn from a 3M scientist. Each finalist will also receive a trip to the [...]

Going beyond the dress and tuxedo, the program is designed to prepare students for life after high school, featuring scholarship, internship and mentorship opportunities with The Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation’s Careers in Entertainment initiative, The Emma Bowen Foundation, Miami Dade College, and New York City’s Center for Youth Employment in partnership with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development’s Ladders for Leaders program. Extending beyond the runway, a new 90-minute SAY YES TO THE PROM special following five students from this year’s Los Angeles event will premiere on TLC on Saturday, [...]
